In September of 2006, a core team of engineers and thought leaders from Intel founded GainSpan to accelerate the adoption of new wireless usage models for in-demand sensor network applications by applying its innovative low power Wi-Fi chip technology to an existing widely deployed standard networking technology — Wi-Fi.

This innovation suddenly removed the two obstacles that had been hindering the market growth of wireless sensor networks, namely high power consumption and lack of mature standards-based solutions, and opened the floodgates of new possibilities for sensor products and applications.

Today, GainSpan is bringing low power Wi-Fi semiconductor and software solutions to market that enable sensors and other devices to run up to 10 years on a single AA battery, a capability unheard of just a short time ago.
